TVB Ratings Report: Big Budget Does Not Equate to Big Ratings

TVB Ratings Report: Big Budget Does Not Equate to Big Ratings

With 2017 almost coming to an end, it is time to start reflecting on the results of TVB’s 50th television season. If there was any lesson to be learned at all, 2017 has taught us that blockbuster productions do not necessarily mean it would win the hearts of the masses, and that lower-budget dramas should not be swept under the rug.

As of today, three of TVB’s top-rated dramas of the year are locally-produced, smaller productions that were never meant to be promoted as big series. Coming fourth on the list is the recently-aired The Exorcist’s Meter <降魔的>, starring Kenneth Ma (馬國明), Mandy Wong (黃智雯), Hubert Wu (胡鴻鈞), and Moon Lau (劉佩玥). The Exorcist’s Meter, a horror drama about a taxi driver who can see supernatural beings, averaged 24.75 rating points per episode, putting it as the fourth most-watched television drama of the 2017 TV season thus far. The Exorcist’s Meter was never meant to be promoted as an anniversary drama, but after a successful premiere episode and an even more successful first week, The Exorcist’s Meter eventually followed the footsteps of Line Walker: The Prelude <使徒行者2>, becoming a kickstarter for TVB’s 50th anniversary season. The Exorcist’s Meter underperformed when it aired its final episode on a Sunday, but the random switch in broadcast date was to blame.

Elena Kong and Ben Wong in “Tiger Mom Blues” (2017).

The third most-watched television drama of the year is Tiger Mom Blues <親親我好媽>, which aired in the beginning of the year. Starring Ben Wong (黃智賢), Elena Kong (江美儀), Sharon Chan (陳敏之), and a special starring appearance by Michelle Yim (米雪), Tiger Mom Blues averaged 25 rating points when it aired in February. The show is also responsible for pushing Matthew Ho (何廣沛) to stardom—the rookie actor is now leading TVB’s next generation of siu sangs, and is co-starring a drama with Joe Ma (馬德鐘).  Tiger Mom Blues was not produced with a big budget, and it also went through a controversial production phase, but it won the audiences with its heartwarming script and talented cast.

Second place is A General, a Scholar, and a Eunuch <超時空男臣>, a time traveling comedy about three Ming Dynasty court officials who were warped into modern-day Hong Kong as they go on a search for their lost princess. Starring Edwin Siu (蕭正楠), Raymond Cho (曹永廉), and Matthew Ho, A General was both a ratings hit and a trending series when it aired in Hong Kong this past summer. It averaged 26.8 points.

Number one on TVB’s most-watched list is no other than The Unholy Alliance <同盟>, the answer to last year’s A Fist Within Four Walls <城寨英雄>. Created by Four Walls producer Jazz Boon (文偉鴻), the martial arts drama saw TV King and Queen duo Ruco Chan (陳展鵬) and Nancy Wu (胡定欣) returning as the lead stars, costarring Film Queen Nina Paw (鮑起靜) in her first TVB drama. The Unholy Alliance easily defeated all other TVB dramas that aired this year, averaging 28 ratings points during its broadcast run. It was not produced with a high budget, but its connection with Four Walls definitely helped with the promotion.

Jessica Hsuan and Frankie Lam in “My Unfair Lady” (2017).

On the other hand, big-budget dramas and carefully-crafted productions like My Unfair Lady <不懂撒嬌的女人> and the co-production Line Walker: The Prelude failed to outrun its local competitors. My Unfair Lady received praises on all fronts—the high-budget camerawork and no-studio filming style definitely earned many praises from critics, but it averaged only 24 points during its broadcast run. The show did, however, give Jessica Hsuan (宣萱) her first TV Queen honor since 1999’s Detective Investigation Files IV <刑事偵緝檔案IV>.

Though led by respected veteran actor Michael Miu (苗僑偉) and popular idol Pakho Chau (周柏豪), Line Walker: The Prelude failed to reach expectations. Despite being a co-production with China’s Penguin Pictures, Line Walker: The Prelude averaged only 24 points during its run. It also failed to catch the same attention in China as its 2014 predecessor.

Can you think of any other examples of successful low-budget TVB dramas?

Ruco Chan Wants to Keep Coupling Up with Nancy Wu

Ruco Chan Wants to Keep Coupling Up with Nancy Wu

The TVB crime drama The Unholy Alliance <同盟> is Hong Kong’s biggest show of 2017, and its final episode—which aired on September 13—was watched by 2.07 million viewers, achieving an average rating of 31.8 points across all viewership platforms. Lead star Ruco Chan (陳展鵬) said it is a “satisfying number”, adding that he would love to do a sequel or another installment of the show.

Last month, the cast gathered together for a ratings celebratory banquet. Stars like Ruco Chan, Nancy Wu (胡杏兒), Joel Chan (陳山聰), Elaine Yiu (姚子羚), Samuel Kwok (郭峰), and Jimmy Au (歐瑞偉) were in attendance. The Unholy Alliance is Ruco’s second collaboration with Nancy, the first being last year’s A Fist Within Four Walls <城寨英雄>, the drama that also got them both TV King and TV Queen.

Ruco said he won’t mind working with Nancy again. “It’s not boring!” he said. “A good partner is hard to come by. It’s like Adam Cheng (鄭少秋) and Liza Wang (汪明荃). They collaborated in so many things together yet no one finds them boring.”

In regards to the rumor that he’s living in with girlfriend Phoebe Sin (單文柔), Ruco smiled and said, “She gave a great response. We live in the same kui [district], not gui [living together]. (Did Ruco teach her that answer?) No, I’m not that smart. (She said she’s never held your hand!) This question was answered before. Just refer back to our old answers. (She said she’s seen your mother.) Yes she has, and many of my friends, too. (Incorporating her into your household?) Not exactly, but maybe my maid.”

Nancy Wu Wants More Screentime with Nina Paw

In regards to a possible sequel or new installment, Nancy said she would love to have more scenes with Nina Paw (鮑起靜). Both actresses are hot in the running for this year’s TV Queen throne.

“Nina Paw’s in the running this year, so I don’t want to think about it,” said Nancy when asked if she has the confidence to win TV Queen a second time. “It’s already a great thing to be nominated alongside her.”

Elaine Yiu Plans for Marriage Next Year

Earlier, Myolie Wu (胡杏兒) revealed to the reporters that one of her close friends has a special announcement prepared. This has led to speculation that “Nonsense Club” member Elaine Yiu would be announcing her marriage to Cheng Tsz-bong (鄭子邦), but she quickly denied.

“Myolie wasn’t talking about that!” Elaine said. “Also, I need to clarify that she was definitely not talking about me. Although [marriage] is a goal of mine, I really don’t have time for that this year. We’ll consider it next year. This can’t be forced. I don’t want to scare [Cheng Tsz-bong] off! Give us some space, and everything will come together.”

“The Unholy Alliance” Comes to an End

“The Unholy Alliance” Comes to an End

The following article contains spoilers for TVB’s The Unholy Alliance, which ended on September 13, 2017.

TVB drama The Unholy Alliance <同盟> ended its 28 episode run on Wednesday, September 13 to ratings success. The crime thriller finale starts with Ko Tsz-kit (Ruco Chan 陳展鵬) abducting his mother Ling Hung (Nina Paw 鮑起靜) and brother Kent (Joel Chan 陳山聰) to bring out the true side of Ling Hei (Mary Hon 韓馬利) and Anthony (Jazz Lam 林子善), both who are fighting to be the leader of The Alliance. Ling Hei forges Ling Hung’s signature in a power transfer contract that would make her the new leader, but Anthony threatens Ling Hei to transfer power over to himself instead. The two break into a fight, resulting in Ling Hei’s death.

Anthony becomes the sole leader of The Alliance—but only briefly. Tsz-kit uncovers his ploy in time and plants Rainman’s poisonous weapon in the Alliance meeting room. Anthony breaks the seal, sending out a waft of poisonous gaps, which wipes out Anthony and the Alliance members. Ling Hung, upon realizing that Tsz-kit had a hand in killing his aunt and cousin, slaps him two hard slaps on the face.

Soon after, Rainman sends assassins to kill Ling Hung. Her loyal bodyguard Mr. Yik (Jimmy Au 歐瑞偉), overwhelmed by the number of attackers, dies protecting Ling Hung, who gets captured.

Tsz-kit meets the four powers behind Ling Hung’s capture, and exchanges himself for Ling Hung’s life, promising to be their new Rainman. Meanwhile, Kent storms into the church to save Ling Hung. “Rainman” Kam Tin (Elena Kong 江美儀) confronts them and makes her way to kill them, but receives a message that Rainman has been replaced. Kam Tin’s assassins kill her. To be the new Rainman, Tsz-kit ends all relations with his family.

Tsz-kit spends the next two years tracking evidence to take down the four powers, and manages to put up all of their criminal evidence to the Internet. He comes across Yuen Ching-yan (Nancy Wu 胡定欣) in the streets, who angrily slaps him on the cheek. But their reunion is a happy one, and after two years apart, they can finally be together again.

What did you think about the ending?
