Wu Xiubo, Angelababy seek comfort in each other in City of Desire

Here’s our first look at City of Desire (I’m glad they changed the name, because Desire and the City just gives the wrong impression), the upcoming modern drama starring Wu Xiubo and Angelababy as two lonely individuals who come together to heal each other, and eventually fall in love. Extended synopsis here.

Ren Zhong (Nothing Gold Can Stay) plays the second male lead, who seems like he will be romantically involved with the female lead.

Huang Xiaoming: “Respecting Your Wife is a Traditional Chinese Virtue”

Huang Xiaoming: “Respecting Your Wife is a Traditional Chinese Virtue”

As the headliner of Nirvana in Fire II <琅琊榜之风起长林>, Huang Xiaoming (黄晓明) has a lot of weight to carry on his shoulders. Despite playing only a supporting character, Xiaoming’s role as the drama’s poster boy is putting him at the center of criticism and discussion. “It’s a lot of pressure,” he said.

But yet, Xiaoming’s short-lived appearance in Nirvana in Fire II is the reason why he must do well in the role. His satisfying performance as “Xiao Pingzhang” has gotten praise from all fronts, and even the producer expressed that Xiaoming’s convincing portrayal of the role may be because Xiaoming himself finds resemblance in Xiao Pingzhang. “His responsibility to his household, his love for his family… it’s all exactly like his role. He has a natural feeling of duty to his family.”

In an interview, Xiaoming remarked that he did find many similarities with Xiao Pingzhang. Although he has no siblings like his character, Xiaoming is the oldest of his family’s generation with younger cousins. “I definitely feel like I should be responsible for them. I’d scold and take care of them. This is definitely the same attitude that Xiao Pingzhang has towards Xiao Pingjing.”

The discussion then came to the topic of marriage, and on the show, Xiaoming’s wife is portrayed by Tong Liya (佟丽娅). Xiaoming drew a lot of inspiration from his real life into the role. He and his wife, Angelababy, have been married since 2015. Their son was born in January 2017.

“In a marriage, the man should be accommodating,” he said. “Your wife shows temper because she is your wife. She won’t show it to other people. There is nothing you can’t accommodate.”

The interviewer joked, “Perhaps being scared of the wife is a traditional Chinese virtue.” Xiaoming shook his head, “I am not scared of my wife. I respect my wife, love my wife. That, I think, is really the traditional Chinese virtue.”

Huang Xuan plays a struggling entrepreneur in new drama

Huang Xuan is everywhere these days thanks to Youth (definitely worth watching, in my opinion), Legend of the Demon Cat and Tribes and Empires: Storm of Prophecy. In Entrepreneurial Age, he’ll be playing Guo Xinnian, a developer who is forced to sell his most successful app ‘Magic Crystal’.

Angelababy plays Na Lan, an analyst who later falls in love with Guo Xinnian, and Wang Yaoqing costars as a CEO who resorts to coercion to achieve his goals. No new information has been released for Zhou Yiwei and Song Yi’s characters, though I’m confident they’ll stand out regardless.

The 40 episode drama will be released sometime next year.

Chen Daoming Dropped Out of “City of Desire” Because of Angelababy?

Chen Daoming Dropped Out of “City of Desire” Because of Angelababy?

At Zhejiang TV’s fall season sales presentation in early September, the Chinese broadcaster announced big plans for their upcoming 2018 television drama City of Desire <欲望之城>, which would feature acclaimed actor Chen Daoming (陈道明) and Tiffany Tang (唐嫣). It was confirmed at the time that City of Desire would begin production in November.

A few weeks after the announcement, the studios reported that Angelababy (杨颖) has replaced Tiffany, who left the cast for reasons unannounced. A few days later, the media reported that Chen Daoming also dropped out, and would be replaced by Wu Xiubo (吴秀波). Just as netizens were about to digest the new cast, a source claimed that Wu Xiubo also wanted to drop out of the project, but his agency has since denied this speculation.

Though it’s not out of the ordinary to see casting changes before the production of a drama, netizens found it interesting to hear actors dropping the project after Angelababy was confirmed to be the lead. Many netizens have actually expressed their desire to see Wu Xiubo leave the cast, due to Angelababy’s reputation of being a poor actress. Many netizens speculated that this was the reason why Chen Daoming opted out.

Despite Angelababy’s popularity, her image took a slight blow after performing poorly in dramas such as General and I <孤芳不自赏> and Wong Kar-wai’s (王家衛) See You Tomorrow <擺渡人>. However, with City of Desire, perhaps Wu Xiubo would be able to train some acting out of Angelababy.

Angelababy to romance Wu Xiubo in Desire and the City

Desire and the City 欲望之城 comes from the production company behind this year’s hit drama The First Half of My Life, and stars Angelababy (General and I) as Lin Li, an optimistic young white collar worker who helps Wu Xiubo‘s (The Advisors Alliance) Jiang Nianhua walk out of depression.

Jiang Nianhua (Wu Xiubo) divorces his wife after she aborts their child without telling him, and works hard to become a successful businessman. However, the higher Jiang Nianhua climbs up the corporate ladder, the more depressed he becomes, and contemplates taking his own life before being persuaded otherwise by Lin Li (Angelababy).

Lin Li and her boyfriend represent the typical modern couple – they fight, break up and make up several times a year, and the fact that they work at the same company makes their relationship even more stressful. The two eventually decide to go their separate ways for good, and Lin Li slowly recovers from the heartbreak after becoming friends with Jiang Nianhua.

The only supporting lead confirmed so far is Ren Zhong (Nothing Gold Can Stay), and after reading the character descriptions, it seems like he’ll be playing a thirty something married man who can’t leave his Casanova habits behind.

Angelababy keeps getting lead roles opposite wonderful actors (thanks Huayi and Huang Xiaoming), though I do hope she’s improved since the fiasco earlier this year. The 45 episode drama started filming today, and comes from director Liu Jin (White Deer Plain) and writer Chen Tong (Divorce Lawyers).
