2017 TVB Anniversary Awards Predictions

2017 TVB Anniversary Awards Predictions

The 2017 TVB Anniversary Awards is just around the corner, and with half of the nominees for Best Actor and Actress already revealed, it is time for some major TV King and Queen predictions.

For this season, the 2017 TVB Anniversary Awards will not be held until January 2018—perhaps this extended time is to make room for anniversary dramas My Ages Apart <誇世代> and Heart and Greed <溏心風暴3> to run for the race. My Ages Apart, which stars Bobby Au-yeung (歐陽震華) and Moses Chan (陳豪), won’t air its last episode until January 12, 2018. Heart and Greed will end its run on January 19, 2018.

For this reason, it seems highly likely that Bobby Au-yeung, Moses Chan, and Heart and Greed’s Bosco Wong (黃宗澤) and Ha Yu (夏雨) would make it into the top five Best Actor nominations for their performances in their respective dramas. This dampens Vincent Wong (王浩信) and Kenneth Ma’s (馬國明) chances to win TV King, despite their popularity.

Though Ali Lee (李佳芯) won Best Actress for her role in Legal Mavericks <踩過界> back in October in Singapore, the possibility of her making it into top five nominations at the anniversary awards is not high. Ali Lee’s Best Actress nomination is not for her performance in Legal Mavericks but in My Ages Apart, which is not getting the same amount of buzz.

What are your predictions for TV King and Queen?

TV Dramas: Bad Boys No Longer the Trend

Once upon a time not so long ago, bad boys were something that all drama-loving girls would fall for. From Meteor Garden’s <流星花園> Dao Mingsi to Devil Beside You’s <惡魔在身邊> Ahmon, bad boys were the trend that defined idol dramas of the 2000’s.

But as we officially hit the late 2010’s, it appears that bad boys are no longer the main act for business. Starting with 2011’s In Time with You <我可能不會愛你>, the “sweet boy”—or warm boy (暖男)—became the one where all girls would fall for. Gone were the days when girls would chase after angsty boys who were broken and mistaken; now all they want is someone who is kind, loving, and supportive.

This transition from bad boy and good boy isn’t just happening to Taiwan and Korea—its influence is affecting Hong Kong dramas too. Manipulative bad boys like Bosco Wong’s (黃宗澤) Sheldon in 2016’s Two Steps from Heaven <幕後玩家> got more hate than love, while simpler characters like Kenneth Ma’s (馬國明) Ma Kwai in The Exorcist’s Meter <降魔的> is getting all the love letters. In fact, Kenneth’s good, obedient image is the reason why he is still so popular with girls, despite not having the handsome looks of Bosco Wong nor the athletic image of Vincent Wong (王浩信).

The formula for popularity is changing, and it’s exciting to know what would happen next.

Bosco Wong, Venus Wong Go on Date in “Flying Tiger”

Bosco Wong, Venus Wong Go on Date in “Flying Tiger”

Playing a Special Duties Unit (SDU) officer in Internet drama Flying Tiger <飛虎極戰>, Bosco Wong (黃宗澤) usually films with heavy body armor and weapons. Yesterday, he took a break from action scenes and had a relaxing dating scene with co-star Venus Wong (王敏奕) instead.

The scene between Bosco and Venus attracted a large number of onlookers who stopped to take photos. Although it was still fairly hot on the day of filming, Bosco and Venus cooled off with fans and air conditioning in the company car when the cameras were not rolling.

Thankful for being able to wear his comfortable clothes in the heat, Bosco said, “There are a lot of people in Sham Shui Po. Compared to the other days where I had to dress in full gear – today’s date scene was a gift and blessing – it was super relaxing! Even though this is a web series, the filming method is akin to a movie. The guns we used to day were all real – It’s definitely a big budget production!”

Venus said that Bosco took good care of her on set. Bosco laughed, “It’s more like she took care of me. We’re a couple in the series, but the script doesn’t say anything about a kiss!” Asked if Bosco will flirt less so he doesn’t anger Venus’s future father in-law, Eric Tsang (曾志偉), Bosco said, “What flirting? I’ll leave this duty up to Michael Miu (苗僑偉)he’s always so chok.”

Venus thanked Bosco for looking out for her, “I don’t have a company car, but he let me use his car for the air conditioning! This is my second time working on a series after Never Dance Alone <女人俱樂部> and I think the production team made good preparations. It was raining and we had a lot of gear to bring; the guns were heavy and we sweated so much. It was very physically tiring!”

Michael Miu Celebrates 59th Birthday with Bosco Wong and Ron Ng

Michael Miu Celebrates 59th Birthday with Bosco Wong and Ron Ng

It was a testosterone-filled birthday for the suave Michael Miu (苗僑偉), who turned 59 years on June 18, coinciding with Father’s Day. On Saturday night, while shooting a scene for Shaw Brothers’ web drama Flying Tiger <飛虎極戰>, Michael’s costars including Bosco Wong (黃宗澤), Ron Ng (吳卓羲), Eddie Cheung (張兆輝), Oscar Leung (梁烈唯), and more surprised him with a birthday party. The crew came out with a birthday song once the clock had struck 12 at midnight.

Shaw Brothers executive Virginia Lok (樂易玲), who also produces the show, presented Michael with a birthday cake that read “handsome to the edge of the earth”. Michael’s wife Jaime Chik (戚美珍) surprised her husband with a bouquet of flowers, while his good pals Bosco and Ron gave him a much-anticipated birthday kiss!

In regards to his birthday wish, he said, “I hope everything goes by smoothly, and everyone stays healthy! Happiness for everyone.” (Surprised?) “Thank you Miss Lok and the crew for their  caring arrangements!”

Commenting that Michael’s friendly nature allows him the joys of having multiple birthday celebrations, the veteran actor laughed and said, “Not necessarily! I’m going to be working a lot! There are many good brothers here tonight, so this will be the birthday party! It’s been such a joy working with them all. We’re partying at work!”

Michael’s costars also used this opportunity to celebrate Father’s Day with their favorite father figure in the business. Oscar said, “Happy birthday Michael! Wish he will continue to stay in good health and enjoy the life he’s living. He is a model father in this industry, and he’s always been my role model.”

“Heart and Greed” Bosco Wong and Louis Yuen are the Set Clowns

“Heart and Greed” Bosco Wong and Louis Yuen are the Set Clowns

A few hot afternoons ago, Heart and Greed <溏心風暴3> actors Bosco Wong (黃宗澤), Louis Yuen (阮兆祥), Louise Lee (李司祺), Ha Yu (夏雨), Susanna Kwan (關菊英), and Vincent Wong (王浩信) showed up on the streets of Tseung Kwan O to film their latest drama, the third installment in the Heart of Greed franchise <溏心風暴系列>.

The show sees Louise, Ha Yu, Bosco, etc. returning as the series’ central characters. Heart and Greed tells the story of two rival families who own Hong Kong-style cafes.

Despite the stuffy weather, the Tseung Kwan O set was packed with humor and fun, thanks to Bosco and Louis, both who are in charge of livening up the atmosphere on the heavy set.

Louise complained about the two class clowns to the reporters, saying, “I usually find a corner to take a nap before the scene is ready. When Louis saw me, he immediately yelled, ‘someone wake up that extra!’ He was talking about me!”

Reporters joked to Louis that he was being very disrespectful to his senior. He laughed and said, “I can only joke like this because we are so close!” As for whether or not the cast is being allowed enough time to rest in between takes, Louise said, “Yes. I get to have some good sleep everyday.”

Bosco Wong Reacts to Myolie Wu’s Baby News: “I’m So Happy For Her”

Bosco Wong Reacts to Myolie Wu’s Baby News: “I’m So Happy For Her”

Bosco Wong (黃宗澤) reacted with nothing but joy when he was asked to comment on ex-girlfriend Myolie Wu’s (胡杏兒) exciting baby news. Myolie, who Bosco split with in 2012, announced on Mother’s Day that she is expecting her first child with husband Philip Lee (李乘德).

At a blessing ceremony for his new television web drama Flying Tiger <飛虎極戰>, Bosco immediately responded with joy when he was asked to comment on Myolie’s baby news.

“Congratulations! I’m so happy for her,” he said. “I hope the baby grows up healthily and well. If she wants more, then [I wish her] two babies within three years!” (When will it be your turn?) “I really have no time to think about that right now.” (Have you messaged Myolie?) “Not yet. I’m terrible.”

Flying Tiger, a collaboration between Hong Kong’s Shaw Brothers and China’s Youku, also stars Michael Miu (苗僑偉), Ron Ng (吳卓羲), Eddie Cheung (張兆輝), Michael Wong (王敏德), Hugo Ng (吳岱融), Christine Ng (伍詠薇), Venus Wong (王敏奕), Grace Chan (陳凱琳), Mandy Wong (黃智雯), Samantha Ko (高海寧), and Oscar Leung (梁烈唯). It is Bosco’s first drama with Ron in over ten years.

Both playing SDU paramilitary officers, Bosco and Ron said they have been working out together, but haven’t yet achieved that ideal “mermaid line” (V-cut) yet.

“I’m still working on it,” said Ron. Bosco added, “I have a ‘goldfish line’ instead. I think Michael Wong is the fittest one out of all of us.”

Ron stressed that while having a fit body is good, it is important to have good endurance for their roles. Bosco expressed, “I think having good endurance is more important. For the role that we’re doing, it’s required.”

Bosco Wong Exhausted from Back-to-back Filming Projects

Bosco Wong Exhausted from Back-to-back Filming Projects

In addition to filming TVB dramas and managing his business, Bosco Wong (黃宗澤) opened a production studio funded by Shaw Brothers. A tired and listless Bosco was spotted filming an outdoor scene for Heart and Greed  <溏心風暴 3>. With noticeable dark under eye circles, Bosco admitted that he has been working nonstop for more than ten days, sleeping an average of one to three hours per night.

Bosco’s War of In-Laws <野蠻奶奶> costar and unofficial godmother, Liza Wang (汪明荃), will also guest star in the drama. Did Bosco personally invite Liza to guest star? He responded, “No. There was a day when Liza brought soup for the crew on set. So the producer asked her to guest star. Originally, the plan was for her to play the role of a judge, but court scenes are indoor and filming will go late into the night. She has to prepare for her concert!”

Fortunately, Bosco will complete all his scenes for the drama soon. However, he will get less than two days’ rest before returning to work to film for Shaw Brother’s Flying Tiger <飛虎極戰>. This will be Bosco’s first project with Shaw Brothers. Has Bosco been training to get his physique to portray a Special Duties Unit officer? “It’s been more than two weeks since I’ve last exercised. If I continue to go to the gym now, I will die of exhaustion!”
