“The Man with the Bird Tattoo” and Other Awkward Titles Featured in 2018 TVB Lineup

“The Man with the Bird Tattoo” and Other Awkward Titles Featured in 2018 TVB Lineup

With the year almost coming to an end, a leaked list of upcoming 2018 TVB series was unofficially released to the public. Although some of the series on the list seemed familiar, some oddly named dramas drew questions.

TVB’s anniversary series, Oh My Grad! <老表畢業喇> and Line Walker: The Prelude <使徒行者2> are nearing the grand finale and although it’s been announced that The Exorcist’s Meter <降魔的> and Heart of Greed 3 <溏心風暴3> will take over their broadcasting slots, many viewers are curious as to what to expect in the new year.

Currently there have been no announcements for the highly anticipated Deep In the Realm of the Conscience <宮心計2之深宮計>, The Learning Curve of a Warlord <大帥哥> or The Forgotten Valley <平安谷之詭谷傳說> but it’s speculated that they will air in the beginning of 2018.

Twenty new series were leaked and while series such as Time of Tung Yang <棟仁的時光>, Kennedy vs. Kennedy <堅離地對堅離地>, Apple Colada <菓欄中的江湖大嫂 >, and Reverse of Fate <逆緣> were easily recognized as they are already in production, some names made fans laugh.

The Man With a Bird Tattoo <鳥紋身的男人>, Preserved Prune and Haw Flake <陳皮梅與山楂餅>, as well as The Strangest Familiar Person <最陌生的熟悉人> were series with odd titles. Despite its awkward title, Preserved Prune and Haw Flake is a spin-off of the hit series The Hippocratic Crush <On Call36小時> focusing on the theme of traditional Chinese medicine.

However, not much description was given for the other two series, and many fans poked fun at the terrible titles, and are anxious to see which artistes will be casted in the end.

Another series named Superhero in White <白色強人> is slated to be a sequel to Law Dis-Order <律政強人>.

One of the most highly talked about programs on the list was definitely Hacken Lee and Joey Leung Variety Show <李克勤,梁榮忠 Variety show>. Many recalled the duo’s hit 2005 talent show Minutes to Fame <殘酷一叮> and wanted to know whether or not this new variety program will be similar.

Next year will be Liza Wang‘s (汪明荃) 50th year in the entertainment industry. Hoping to celebrate this special occasion, TVB is featuring a special program called, The Queen’s Elegant 50 Years <女王華麗50年>.

Above: It’s not clear when “Succession War” and “Threesome” will be aired.

Introducing TVB’s Anniversary Drama Lineup for 2017

Introducing TVB’s Anniversary Drama Lineup for 2017

Now that The Unholy Alliance <同盟> has completed its broadcast, and Legal Mavericks <踩過界> is nearing the end of its run, it’s time for TVB’s traditional anniversary season of television dramas. 2017 is TVB’s 50th year since establishment, and the legendary Hong Kong station will be celebrating it with a total of six anniversary dramas this year.

This year’s anniversary season will start with Line Walker: The Prelude <使徒行者2>, a prequel to the award-winning 2014 drama of the same name. The crime drama takes place right before the events of the 2014 drama, and sees the return of Michael Miu (苗僑偉) reprising his role as the CIB inspector Cheuk Hoi, who uncovers a dark secret within the police department. The prequel is a co-production with Mainland China’s Penguin Pictures, and costars Moses Chan (陳豪), Jessica Hsuan (宣萱), Benjamin Yuen (袁偉豪), Pakho Chau (周柏豪), Priscilla Wong (黃翠如), and Hui Shiu-hung (許紹雄), with guest appearances by Eddie Cheung (張兆輝), Alice Chan (陳煒), Kenny Wong (黃德斌), Tony Hung (洪永城), and Shiga Lin (連詩雅). Line Walker: The Prelude premieres Monday, September 18, 2017.

The second anniversary drama to grace HK television screens is  Oh My Grad <老表,畢業喇!>, the third installment to Wong Cho-lam’s (王祖藍) Inbound Troubles <老表> television series that started in 2013. Oh My Grad stars returning cast members Wong Cho-lam, Roger Kwok (郭晉安), Bob Lam (林盛斌), Louis Cheung (張繼聰), and introduces new cast members Babyjohn Choi (蔡瀚億), Koni Lui (呂慧儀), Joyce Cheng (鄭欣宜), and a guest appearance by Eliza Sam (岑麗香). Due to scheduling conflicts,  Ada Choi (蔡少芬) replaced Joey Meng (萬綺雯) as the drama’s female lead. Oh My Grad premieres September 25, 2017.

Picking up Line Walker: The Prelude’s timeslot will be the horror comedy The Exorcist’s Meter <降魔的>, which centers on a taxi driver who has the ability to see supernatural beings. TVB will be complementing the drama with a spin-off web series, which will air alongside the original show. Despite the show being aired during the anniversary lineup, it is not regarded as one of the seven 50th anniversary dramas. The Exorsist’s Meter stars Kenneth Ma (馬國明), Mandy Wong (黃智雯), Hubert Wu (胡鴻鈞), Moon Lau (劉佩玥), Ram Chiang (蔣志光), Susan Tse (謝雪心), Hugo Wong (黃子恆), Kitty Yuen (阮小儀), and King Kong Lee (金剛). It premieres October 30, 2017.

The cross-generation drama My Ages Apart <誇時代> will be taking over the time slot of Oh My Grad, and premiere on November 6, 2017. The 50-episode drama was filmed at a budget of nearly HK$50 million, and follows the story of two families. It has a star-studded cast, featuring Bobby Au-yeung (歐陽震華), Moses Chan (陳豪), Kristal Tin (田蕊妮), Louis Cheung (張繼聰), Maggie Shiu (邵美琪), Ali Lee (李佳芯), Elena Kong (江美儀), David Chiang (將大衛), Hui Shiu-hung (許紹雄), Eddie Kwan (關禮傑), Katy Kung (龔嘉欣), and Sammy Leung (森美).

The highly-anticipated thirdquel of the Heart of Greed <溏心風暴> trilogy is set to premiere sometime in November or December. The award-winning, record-breaking TVB television series will see the return of Best Actor and Actress winners Ha Yu (夏雨), Louise Lee (李司祺), and Michelle Yim (米雪) at the helm, bringing legend back to life. Though most of the older generation cast members will be returning, only Bosco Wong (黃宗澤) of the younger generation is returning. Costarring is Susanna Kwan (關菊英), Vincent Wong (王浩信), Priscilla Wong (黃翠如), Eliza Sam, Sharon Chan (陳敏之), Michael Tong (唐文龍), and Louis Yuen (阮兆祥).

Deep in the Realm of Conscience <宮心計2·深宮計>, sister production to 2009’s record-breaking Beyond the Realm of Conscience <宮心計> is slated for an early 2018 release. The Tang Dynasty epic stars Nancy Wu (胡定欣) and Annie Liu (劉心悠), respectively the empress and princess of Tang. Costarring is Steven Ma (馬浚偉) as Li Longji, Emperor Xuanzong of Tang. The drama also stars Kenneth Ma, Edwin Siu (蕭正楠), Chrissie Chau (周秀娜), Alice Chan, Jacqueline Wong (黃心穎), Susan Tse, Candy Lo (羅霖), Akina Hong (康華), Angie Cheong (張慧儀), Pinky Cheung (張文慈), and a guest appearance by Michelle Yim.

Dicky Cheung’s (張衛健) first TVB drama in 20 years, The Learning Curve of a Warlord <大帥哥>, is in the anniversary drama lineup for early 2018. It takes place in the early Republican era of China, and costars Sisley Choi (蔡思貝), Tony Hung, Raymond Cho (曹永廉), Tsui Wing (徐榮), Oscar Li (李嘉), Zoie Tam (譚凱琪), and Vivien Yeo (楊秀惠).

The last anniversary drama for TVB’s 50th anniversary is the historical epic Succession War <天命>, a Qing Dynasty drama that centers on the life of corrupted official, Heshen. Ruco Chan (陳展鵬) stars as Heshen, costarring Shaun Tam (譚俊彥) as Emperor Jiaqing. It also stars Selena Li (李施嬅), Natalie Tong (唐詩詠), Elaine Yiu (姚子羚), Joel Chan (陳山聰), KK Cheung (張國強), Jonathan Cheung (張頴康), and Matthew Ho (何廣沛).

With such a long line of dramas waiting in line for broadcast, there is a high possibility that the TVB Anniversary Awards will be pushed back to January 2018.

Tony Hung on Working with Dicky Cheung

Tony Hung on Working with Dicky Cheung

Currently filming TVB drama The Learning Curve of a Warlord <大帥哥>, Tony Hung (洪永城) is thrilled to have an opportunity to work with Dicky Cheung (張衞健)Since filming started in March, Tony had to work 12 to 13 hours on average every day. But the hardworking actor is used to the hectic filming schedule.

Tony said, “My past record was when I worked three days straight with only three hours of rest per day. I had to drink cordyceps tea to stay awake. I’m sure with enough enthusiasm, you can hang in there. This time working with Dicky Cheung, I really learned something new every day. Even when he is not in the scene himself, he would offer opinion and advice.”

The cast and crew will have to fly to Mainland China and complete the last segment of filming and stay until September. Tony has already started asking Raymond Cho (曹永廉), who is an expert on this topic, for advice on how to combat the humid summer weather.

When Tony was told that Raymond’s six-year-old daughter idolized Edwin Siu (蕭正楠), Tony laughed and quickly said, “She hasn’t seen me yet – once she does, she’ll switch to idolizing someone else.

“Warlord” Holds Blessing Ceremony, Dicky Cheung Misses Speaking in Cantonese

“Warlord” Holds Blessing Ceremony, Dicky Cheung Misses Speaking in Cantonese

TVB anniversary drama The Learning Curve of a Warlord <大帥哥> held its first blessing ceremony on Friday. The drama, a war drama starring Dicky Cheung (張衛健) in his first TVB drama in 20 years, has officially started principal photography.

Warlord also stars Sisley Choi (蔡思貝), Tony Hung (洪永城), Raymond Cho (曹永廉), Tsui Wing (徐榮), Oscar Li (李嘉), Zoie Tam (譚凱琪), and Vivien Yeo (楊秀惠).

Dicky has described his return to TVB as “nostalgic”, and that he has come across many old friends. It’s been over two decades since Dicky last starred in a TVB drama; his last work was 1996’s Journey to the West <西遊記>.

“Came across many old friends,” said Dicky. “They all say I haven’t changed much, but you guys are wrong! I’ve become much more complicated. Not as simple as before.”

The 52-year-old actor said he misses the atmosphere at TVB. Though his years at TVB had been some of the most difficult in his life, it was also his happiest. “It’s true that I didn’t earn much money then. My salary all went to rent or to my brother’s tuition, but I was very happy, because I was simple-minded.”

He admitted that working in the mainland is stressful, as he has to worry about box office and language barriers. “That’s why I’m really enjoying this process. I enjoy acting in Cantonese.”

Sisley Choi Says Tony Hung Has s “Strong Reproductive Capacity”

In Warlord, Sisley Choi plays a revolutionary, one of Dicky’s three wives, while Tony plays one of Dicky’s warlord companions. For his character, Tony had to shave off a slit from his eyebrow.

“My family elders didn’t like the look,” confessed Tony. “Because shaving eyebrows are unlucky. But some of it is growing back already!”

Sisley, confusing her Chinese vocabulary, blurted out that it’s because Tony has “strong reproductive capacity.” Realizing what she had said, Sisley covered her face and laughed with embarrassment.

Tony then asked, “You mean hair growth, right? Or I have good metabolism?”

Sisley said, “Yes! I wanted to say good metabolism!”

Vivien Yeo Gains Weight

Vivien Yeo plays an entertainer in the show, also as one of Dicky’s wives. For a more voluptuous body, Vivien has to work out and gain weight for her role.

“I went from 49 kg (108 lbs) to 50.6 kg (111 lbs),” said Vivien. “I’ve been eating four to five meals every day, and eating cheese upon cheese. But I need to push up all the weight that I’ve gained from my bottom to the top!”

Dicky Cheung, Michael Miu, Bobby Au-yeung, and More Promote Upcoming TVB Anniversary Dramas

Dicky Cheung, Michael Miu, Bobby Au-yeung, and More Promote Upcoming TVB Anniversary Dramas

Some of the biggest stars in Hong Kong entertainment have gathered together this week for the 2017 Hong Kong International Film & TV Market, or FILMART, at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. The fair ends on Thursday, March 16.

TVB was one of the biggest content producers at the fair, bringing over 70 artistes and introducing 16 upcoming television dramas to the media, seven of them being anniversary dramas for the network’s 50th anniversary.

The first anniversary drama in the roster is Oh My Grad <老表,畢業喇!> starring Roger Kwok (郭晉安), Ada Choi (蔡少芬), and Wong Cho-lam (王祖藍), which is projected to air sometime in the early summer of 2017. Line Walker: The Prelude <使徒行者2>, prequel to the 2014 drama of the same name, may be next in line. The crime drama stars Michael Miu (苗僑偉), Moses Chan (陳豪), Jessica Hsuan (宣萱), Benjamin Yuen (袁偉豪), Pakho Chau (周柏豪), and Priscilla Wong (黃翠如).

Assistant General Manager of TVB productions, Felix To (杜之克), said, “This year is actually a very important year [for us], and each and every drama we’ve chosen to do has its own value. The anniversary time slot will start in July or August, and it will end in the first quarter of 2018.”

Felix To added that the long broadcast period of anniversary dramas may affect the broadcast date of the 2017 TVB Anniversary Awards. “Because the anniversary time slot is so long, it’s possible that we may postpone the awards show. But it won’t be too far ahead. We don’t want severe changes.”

Due to their long filming periods, Dicky Cheung’s (張衛健) The Learning Curve of a Warlord <大帥哥> and the blockbuster Deep in the Realm of Conscience <宮心計2·深宮計> will be some of the last anniversary dramas to air this year. Productions for both dramas will not be completed until the late summer.

“We’ll be going to Fujian to shoot the drama this summer,” said Dicky. “I’m not looking forward to that.” He laughed at his own misfortune at having to film most of his costume dramas in the heat, but added that some of his most successful dramas were shot during the summer.

Reporters told Dicky that his ex-girlfriend, Line Walker actress Jessica Hsuan, is interested in collaborating with him again. Dicky said, “She should have said that earlier! I don’t have a say at TVB, but I will not be against it! I am still friends with [my exes].” (What about your other ex, Elvina Kong 江欣燕? Do you mind if she makes a guest appearance?) “I’ve actually thought about this, but it really depends on the script.”

It has been said that Dicky’s costar, Tony Hung (洪永城), was seen going to the restroom with Dicky. The actor nodded with a laugh, “That’s true. I was lost.” (Together?) “Of course!” (You’ve seen it then!) “I rather not!”

James Ng and Bobby Au-yeung

Bobby Au-yeung (歐陽震華), who headlines TVB’s other anniversary drama My Ages Apart <跨時代> with Moses Chan, joked about the incident where costar James Ng (吳業坤) had a visible bulge while accepting a music award on stage in 2015. Bobby said he has given James the nickname “Big Eagle” while Sammy Sum (森美) liked to call him “Burst”.

My Ages Apart is produced at 50 episodes. It also stars Louis Cheung (張繼聰), Kristal Tin (田蕊妮), Ali Lee (李佳芯), Maggie Shiu (邵美琪), Elena Kong (江美儀), Hui Shiu-hung (許紹雄), Eddie Kwan (關禮傑), and John Chiang (姜大衛).

Former couple Kenneth Ma (馬國明) and Nancy Wu (胡定欣) got along really well while the two promoted Deep in the Realm of Conscience, sister production to 2009’s Beyond the Realm of Conscience <宮心計>. Kenneth, however, did not interact much with his current rumored girlfriend Jacqueline Wong (黃心穎), who also stars in the show and attended the event.

Jacqueline said she’s not jealous of Kenneth and Nancy, also expressing that she doesn’t mind working with Kenneth as a couple on-screen, regardless of their real-life relationship status.

Like its predecessor, Deep in the Realm of Conscience is set in Tang Dynasty China, during the reign of Emperor Xuanzong, 100 years before Beyond. It stars Nancy Wu, Kenneth Ma, Steven Ma (馬浚偉), Annie Liu (劉心悠), Edwin Siu (蕭正楠), Chrissie Chau (周秀娜), Alice Chan (陳煒), Susan Tse (謝雪心), Candy Lo (羅霖), Angie Cheong (張慧儀), Akina Hong (康華), Pinky Cheung (張文慈), and Michelle Yim (米雪).

Other anniversary dramas marked for 2017 includes Succession War <天命> starring Ruco Chan (陳展鵬) and Shaun Tam (譚俊彥); and Heart and Greed <溏心風暴3>, starring Michelle Yim, Ha Yu (夏雨), Bosco Wong (黃宗澤), Louise Lee (李司棋), Susanna Kwan (關菊英), Michael Tong (唐文龍), and veteran actress Nora Miao (苗可秀) in her first TVB drama.

Dicky Cheung’s New TVB Drama “The Learning Curve of a Warlord” Holds Costume Fitting

Dicky Cheung’s New TVB Drama “The Learning Curve of a Warlord” Holds Costume Fitting

Starring Dicky Cheung (張衛健) in his first TVB drama in 21 years, The Learning Curve of a Warlord <大帥哥> held its first costume fitting press conference in Tseung Kwan O on Friday. The comedy drama, which takes place during the warlord period of China, will be part of TVB’s anniversary drama lineup. Produced by Steven Tsui (徐正康), the production period for Warlord is expected to be around six months.

The drama stars Dicky as the titular warlord. Sisley Choi (蔡思貝) is the female lead, playing a revolutionary and one of Dicky’s wives. Tony Hung (洪永城), Raymond Cho (曹永廉), Tsui Wing (徐榮), and Oscar Li (李嘉) star as Dicky’s partners in crime. Vivien Yeo (楊秀惠) and Zoie Tam (譚凱琪) play Dicky’s other wives.

“When I first received news of casting, I didn’t believe it,” said Sisley. “But now, this information has seeped in and I’m excited. I met [Dicky] for the first time a few days for our costume fitting, and it was amazing. I can’t believe it’s real. So real. I’m so happy.”

Dicky is known for his sharp and quick-witted acting, which tends to stress out his co-actors who have less experience. “That’s great,” said Sisley. “Hope I can learn some more from him. Maybe I’ll become an ‘old fire soup’ [simmered soup] after making soup with him for six months.”

Tony said, “There’s going to be pressure, but we’ll treat it as our driving force. [Dicky] is one of the kings of television. Hopefully we can learning a lot from him. Really looking forward to this collaboration.”

When the cast were introducing their roles, Tony shared that he used to dream about fighting demons alongside Dicky in 1996’s Journey to the West <西遊記>, which was also Dicky’s last TVB drama. “That’s why when I saw Dicky just now, I couldn’t help but to call him by his nickname on the show.” Dicky then turned to Tony and asked, “You were on the show?”

Tony was then teased for being bold and disrespectful for calling Dicky by his nickname. The Married but Available <我瞞結婚了> actor immediately explained, “I couldn’t help it! I felt so nostalgic and warm after seeing him!”
