Once Upon a Time <三生三世十里桃花>, the feature-length adaptation of Tangqi Gongzi’s (唐七公子) Three Lives Three Worlds, Ten Miles Peach Blossoms, will open nationwide in China on August 3, 2017 at 2 p.m. Yang Yang (杨洋), who plays Prince Ye Hua in the film, sat down for an interview in Guangzhou to promote the film. The young 25-year-old actor, playing opposite Crystal Liu Yifei (刘亦菲) as Bai Qian, gave himself full points for his portrayal of Ye Hua.
“I give myself 100 points,” he said. “I can’t disappoint you guys. There’s going to be regrets in every film we do, but at least we tried our best.”
To get himself in character, Yang Yang read the novel before starting work on Once Upon a Time. “What captivated me the most was the love story between Ye Hua and Bai Qian. The love they share is undeniable. I’m also very thankful of our entire team—they helped us finish this wonderful movie with great confidence.”
To prepare for his role, Yang Yang stayed on set all day. He researched online to read fan comments and took notes of character descriptions. He described Ye Hua as a “mysterious father-like” character, and shared, “I spent a lot of time with a child on set, and that helped me get into character.”
Yang Yang added that Ye Hua is quiet, reserved, and tends to keep problems to himself. “He wants to talk about his problems, but he can’t. He’s worried that if he gives too much emotion, the people closest to him would leave him.”
Due to the fantasy setting, many scenes of the film were shot against a green screen. “It wasn’t easy,” said Yang Yang. “There’s nothing around you except green screen, and you have to rely on your imagination. We also had many wire stunts. It’s standard of us to do the same sequence 20 to 30 times.”
On working with Crystal, Yang Yang said, “It was great. We’re both Virgos, and the director as well, so we make a great team. The crew was probably tired of us! [Crystal and I] found our chemistry. She’s cute, bubbly, and very professional about her work.”
Asking if he’s worried that his pretty-boy looks would influence viewers’ opinions about his acting, he said, “Thank you for the compliments, but I hope everyone can pay attention to the story too. Once you start getting noticed, other things besides your looks would shine out. It’s a good thing. Besides looks, it’s also important to carry some talent. Acting can be a learning process. If you ask me to play Ye Hua now, I might have a different approach [to the character].”
