Zanilia Zhao, Zheng Shuang, and Yang Yang Eyed for “Soul Mate” TV Version

Zanilia Zhao, Zheng Shuang, and Yang Yang Eyed for “Soul Mate” TV Version

The 2016 film Soul Mate <七月与安生> was not only a breakout success, Zhou Dongyu (周冬雨) and Sandra Ma (马思纯) shared the Best Actress award for the Golden Horse Awards last year, becoming the new ‘it’ actresses of the Chinese film industry.

Various sources are claiming that a Soul Mate TV adaptation is in the making, and producers are eyeing Zanilia Zhao Liying (赵丽颖) and Zheng Shuang (郑爽) to play Ansheng and Qiyue, respectively. The male lead, on the other hand, is rumored to be played by Yang Yang (杨洋).

Should this casting be true, Soul Mate would become one of the most anticipated TV blockbusters of 2018. Zanilia, Zheng Shuang, and Yang Yang are extremely popular actors in the industry, and they have starred in some of China’s highest-rated television dramas in history. Fans are excited to see the big stars collaborate, but many feel that Yang Yang may be too big of a star to play the male lead, who has more of a supporting presence in the story.

Zanilia Zhao, Loura Lou Courted to Star in “Wrong Carriage, Right Groom” Remake

The popular 2001 Chinese period comedy Wrong Carriage, Right Groom <上错花轿嫁对郎> will be getting a brand new remake, and producers are actively courting Zanilia Zhao Liying (赵丽颖) and Loura Lou Yixiao (娄艺潇) to star in the ancient comedy.

The hit television series which starred Nie Yuan (聂远), Crystal Huang Yi (黄奕), Shi Xiaohong (师小红) and Li Lin (李琳) tells the story of two Yangzhou women who each went on the wrong wedding carriage when the bride-to-bes stopped by the same small village town to avoid the downpour of rain. The girls ended up marrying into the wrong families. The period comedy is regarded as a classic in the Chinese TV industry.

According to various reports, Zanilia Zhao and Loura Lou are being courted to play the two female leads in the remake. Han Dong (韩栋) and Yuan Hong (袁弘) are rumored to be playing the two male leads.

Zanilia is one of China’s highest-paid actresses—many of her starring dramas have become ratings hits in the mainland, with the smash hit Princess Agents <楚乔传> being her latest success. Loura Lou, on the other hand, came to prominence after starring in the hit television series iPartment <爱情公寓>.

Should this casting come true, the Wrong Carriage remake may end up being the main act to push Han Dong, who despite having had a prolific acting career, failed to find a hit under his hands.

What do you guys think of this casting?

Angelababy May Replace Zanilia Zhao in “The Journey of Flower” Movie

Angelababy May Replace Zanilia Zhao in “The Journey of Flower” Movie

2015’s The Journey of Flower <花千骨> has not only helped Wallace Huo (霍建華) reach another peak in his acting career, it has also established Zanilia Zhao Liying (赵丽颖) as one of China’s highest-paid TV actresses. The fantasy series—China’s first drama to surpass 20 billion views online—was produced by Tang Lijin (唐丽君), who recently confirmed to the press that she is working on a film version of the show, to be shot at the end of the year.

As exciting as this announcement is, the movie version of The Journey of Flower has come across some problems. Due to scheduling conflicts, Zanilia is unable to reprise her role as the show’s female lead, Hua Qiangu. Rumors say the studios are looking at replacing Zanilia with Angelababy (楊穎), which has brought upon some disagreements among netizens and fans of the original series.

Rumor has it that Wallace will be reprising his role as the show’s male lead Bai Zihua, but his agency has not confirmed the casting. The Taiwanese actor is currently on a break, having just completed Ruyi’s Royal Love in the Palace <如懿传> starring opposite Zhou Xun (周迅).

A Roller Coaster of Emotions: Zanilia Zhao Breaks Her Own Record with “Princess Agents”

A Roller Coaster of Emotions: Zanilia Zhao Breaks Her Own Record with “Princess Agents”

Zanilia Zhao Liying (赵丽颖) has another big hit in her hands, breaking her own record.

Produced by Ciwen Media and Croton Media, Zanilia’s latest television drama Princess Agents <楚乔传> has been breaking records left and right since its world premiere on June 5, 2017. The historical fiction drama, which is set during the Northern Wei dynasty, also stars Lin Gengxin (林更新) and Shawn Dou (窦骁).

According to CSM Media Research, Princess Agents has exceeded three percent in ratings, becoming the first non-holiday weekday television drama on Hunan TV to break past three. The previous drama to break a non-holiday ratings record was The Journey of Flower <花千骨> in 2015, which also starred Zanilia.

As of July 17, Princess Agents has reached 30 billion hits across all video sharing platforms, dethroning the critically-acclaimed political thriller In the Name of People <人民的名义> as the second most-watched television drama online. Still sitting in first place is the fantasy romance Eternal Love <三生三世十里桃花>, with 39 billion viewers.

However, it is expected that Princess Agents would dethrone Eternal Love soon, as Princess Agents is also the first television drama in history to exceed 30 billion views during its original run.

A netizen praised, “Princess Agents is like Chu Qiao (Zanilia Zhao) herself, always steadily rising and breaking her own limits. It’s a surprise.”

Critics said they expect to feel a “roller coaster of emotions” after watching the previews of this week’s episodes. The shocking factor of Princess Agents is believed to be one of the reasons why it has managed to attract so many loyal viewers.

Princess Agents will air its final episode on August 1, 2017.

Zanilia Zhao: From Village Girl to Superstar

Zanilia Zhao: From Village Girl to Superstar

It was a safe success for tge Chinese historical fiction drama Princess Agents <楚乔传>, which recently exceeded 20 billion views on video streaming sites. Much to the success of the show owes to the uber-popular Zanilia Zhao Liying (赵丽颖), who stars as the drama’s titular character, a slave girl who defies all odds to become one of her kingdom’s most powerful military strategists.

In fact, Zanilia’s own background is quite similar to her character. The 29-year-old of humble beginnings first joined the industry in 2006, after winning in a star audition hosted by Yahoo. Following her signing with Huayi Brothers, which she remained with until 2010, Zanilia made her debut in 2007’s critically-acclaimed Golden Marriage <金婚>. Playing only minor characters at first, it wasn’t until 2010’s The Dream of Red Mansions <红楼梦> when she became noticed. 2013’s Legend of Lu Zhen <陆贞传奇>, in which she starred as the main lead, was her first breakthrough. 2015’s The Journey of Flower <花千骨> solidified her success.

It wasn’t an easy road to stardom, however. To this day, Zanilia still suffers through negative comments about family and background. Many anti-fans have harassed Zanilia about her poor background—the 29-year-old was raised in a small village in Langfang, Hebei, China, and only has a secondary school degree. It was to the point where Zanilia herself had to step out to make a comment, saying, “So what if I came from a village?”

Zanilia never tried to hide her poor background. She said on a show, “I grew up in a rural area. My ancestors were all farmers. My forefathers all loved art, but it never aligned with the film and television industry. However, it was because of my rural background that I was able to train my will and determination. It got me to become tough. These experiences got me to where I am today.”

The Princess Agents actress finally reaped the fruits of her success in 2014, when she established her own personal studio. Originally meant to be a personal agency, Zanilia went on to sign upcoming actors Kim Han (金瀚) and Wang Zijie (王子桀), ready to cultivate a new generation of artists.
